Blogging Authority Darren Rowse visited #BWEchat Wednesday to discuss a brief history of blogging over the last 10 years.
| “ | a blog with ‘soul’ is written more from the heart, tells stories, is interested in readers but is done with passion #bwechat | |||
One of the popular tips made by Rowse was the creation of an email newsletter, a “must do” for newbies at blogging.
| “ | A5.5 I’d start an email newsletter Day 1. Its the biggest source of traffic, community and profit that I have on @digitalps #BWEChat | |||
| “ | starting a newsletter would be the biggest thing I did right with @digitalps – its a golden strategy #bwechat | |||
| “ | @nickelnm my newsletter on dPS is basically a summary of our weekly posts in an email #BWEChat | |||
Some users offered their advice on newsletter creation as well.
| “ | RT @Danimezza: Making sure it’s not fluff but valuable and useful #bwechat #newsletter -> what do YOU put in your newsletters | |||
| “ | RT @teewhyare: I use mailchimp for my newsletter, no complaints yet but as it grows, I’ll look into aweber. #bwechat | |||
| “ | @NotActuallyHero My advice is always to start with Aweber to avoid any probs w/ migration & Aweber has the best deliverability. #bwechat | |||
| “ | A5.1 I’d put more time into thinking about WHO I want to reach. These days I create ‘reader profiles’ which have been very useful #BWEChat | |||
Rowse also had comments on the failures of an old favorite of bloggers, the blogroll.
| “ | I never really liked the blogroll – it got a little political for me #bwechat | |||
| “ | @JudyHelfand was hard, as a blogger with a readership I had people ‘pitching’ me to get on my blog roll or boycotting if they wernt #BWEchat | |||
| “ | at one point I had 250 people on my blogroll – became a big job to maintain – trying to please everyone #bwechat | |||
There was plenty to be said about that from participants.
| “ | @Julies_Tweets Most people create but dont maintain blogroll. Like @chrisgarrett idea to have a more active "check out" section #bwechat | |||
| “ | @Julies_Tweets You’re wasting your time maintaining a blogroll. Nobody clicks on them anymore. #BWEChat | |||
| “ | q4 – with the death of the blogroll, seems like fewer bloggers are trying to help each other #bwechat | |||
| “ | Instead of a regular blogroll, I link to individual posts that have changed me. A lot easier to maintain & ppl don’t try to buy #BWEchat | |||
| “ | If you like someone’s blog – its probably more useful to your readers to link to a post that they wrote than their front page #bwechat | |||
Rowse also suggested bloggers create Profiles of their readers to calibrate their audience.
| “ | A5.2 I’d be doing a lot of research into the needs and problems of my readers to identify how to serve them best #BWEChat | |||
And lastly, people demonstrated just how lazy RTing is…with RTs.
| “ | RT @larakulpa: RT @problogger: RT @chrisgarrett: RT @problogger: I think RTing kinda made us a bit lazy too #bwechat | |||
| “ | Yes. Ironic that I am RTing this… |

During a particular Twitter Chat or phenomenon, I may take it upon myself to quote you on my blog using the tool “Storify.” This tool lets me take tweets you say and upload them to my blog. This helps you gain reach as I’m saying you have something important to say. However, If you do not desire your tweet posted on this blog, please inform me via Twitter or contact form and it will be removed.
